How We Test Gear
Our research methodology — what goes into every recommendation on this site.
The Bite Intel is a research-driven publication. We don't claim to field-test every product we cover — that would be impossible and dishonest to say. What we do instead is invest significant time in structured research so that our recommendations reflect real-world performance, not spec sheets.
1. Product Research
Before writing about any product, we study it thoroughly: manufacturer specs, materials, construction details, sizing, compatibility, and how it fits into the broader category. We compare it against competing products at the same price point and above.
2. Real Angler Feedback
We aggregate and analyze verified buyer reviews from Amazon, REI, Bass Pro Shops, and other major retailers — often hundreds of reviews per product. We specifically look for patterns: recurring complaints, long-term durability reports, and use cases where a product excels or fails. A single glowing review means nothing; a pattern across 400 reviews does.
We also monitor angler communities — r/kayakfishing, r/Fishing, kayak fishing Facebook groups, and fishing forums — for unfiltered, unsponsored opinions from people who bought the gear with their own money.
3. Editorial Independence
We participate in affiliate programs, including Amazon Associates. When you buy through our links, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This is how we keep the site running.
Affiliate relationships do not influence our recommendations. We link to the product we genuinely believe is the best choice for the use case — not the one with the highest commission. If a product has serious flaws, we say so.
4. Category Expertise
We focus exclusively on kayak fishing. Narrow focus means deeper knowledge — we understand the constraints of a kayak platform (weight limits, rigging, stability, storage), the specific demands of fishing from a sit-on-top or sit-in kayak, and how gear choices interact with each other. A rod holder recommendation isn't made in isolation from how it fits into a full kayak setup.
5. Regular Updates
Gear changes. Prices change. New products come out. We revisit our posts regularly to update recommendations, prices, and availability so you're not reading advice based on discontinued products.
What We Don't Do
- Accept free products in exchange for positive reviews
- Write sponsored content disguised as editorial
- Recommend products we wouldn't buy ourselves
- Inflate ratings to earn higher commissions
